Leavenworth Christmas lights dates, hours and parking

Leavenworth Christmas lights are on 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, Thanksgiving through February, with no switch-on. The 2026 dates, costs, parking and the drive.
As of October 2026, Leavenworth's Christmas lights are on from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day from Thanksgiving, which is Thursday, November 26 in 2026, through the end of February, and they are free to see, by the chamber's Christmastown page. The 2026 Christmastown program, with Santa, carolers, Gazebo music and four ticketed shows at the Festhalle, runs Friday, November 27 through Thursday, December 24. There is no lighting ceremony to time a trip around. From Enumclaw the drive is about 137 miles by Interstate 90 and Blewett Pass or 144 by Stevens Pass, downtown parking costs $4.50 an hour in December by the city's 2026 rate calendar, and a free Link Transit shuttle runs in from the park-and-ride behind Safeway.
The town stopped flipping the switch. The Christmas Lighting Festival meant a countdown on December weekends, and a Wenatchee World photo caption put the crowd on Front Street for the first lighting Saturday of 2016 at an estimated "over 15,000 people." The chamber canceled the 2020 ceremony in the pandemic and left the lights on from Thanksgiving to Valentine's Day instead, and in May 2021 it told the Wenatchee World the always-on display would stay and the festival would become Village of Lights. Its December FAQ says the town stopped lighting up "at a certain time on weekends, which drew huge crowds vying to get to town for that one moment." On October 14, 2026, Google was still suggesting a lighting ceremony and festival tickets to anyone who typed the town's name and Christmas; the ceremony is gone, and the lights do not need a ticket.
When are the Leavenworth Christmas lights on in 2026?
Every day from Thanksgiving through the end of February: Thursday, November 26, 2026 through Sunday, February 28, 2027, from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.; the chamber's FAQ promises only that it aims to have them lit by Thanksgiving. Christmastown, the programmed part, runs from the day after Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve, November 27 to December 24 in 2026; the chamber's festivals summary page still says November 28, but its Christmastown page and its own Black Friday description both put the opening on Friday the 27th. In January the lights stay up for Winter Karneval, with fireworks over town at 6 p.m. on Sunday, January 17, 2027, and in February for a promotion the chamber calls Love from Leavenworth. The display is more than half a million lights by the chamber's count.
Is there a Leavenworth Christmas lighting ceremony?
No ceremony, no countdown and no ticket. What replaced the switch is Santa's noon arrival at the Gazebo in Front Street Park on Saturdays and Sundays, with Mrs. Claus, Rudolph and Frosty, and costumed characters downtown until 4 p.m. The Krampus figures some visitors meet are not the chamber's; its FAQ expects them in town on November 27 and 28, 2026.
What does Christmastown cost, and what is on the schedule?
The lights and the Gazebo music are free, and the 2026 page lists no charge for the Festhalle or for Santa; only four evening shows at the Festhalle charge, and tickets are sold at the door. The Festhalle, at 1001 Front Street, opens noon to 4 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and noon to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with Santa photos and crafts; carolers walk downtown from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday from December 1 to 23, and the Gazebo at 800 Front Street has free live music. The ticketed shows are the movie Elf on Saturday, November 28 at 7 p.m., $8; the Merry Christmas From Leavenworth concert on Saturday, December 5, $5, which the listing puts at 7 p.m. and the Gazebo schedule on the same page at 7:30, so arrive for the earlier time; the Jewel Tones Motown Christmas Show on Saturday, December 12 at 8 p.m., $15; and the comedian Manuela Horn with her Slay Belles on Sunday, December 20 and Tuesday, December 22 from 5 to 6:30 p.m., $15, or $5 for children 12 and under. The page says Santa stays through December 24 in three places and through December 23 in one; on Christmas Eve the Festhalle closes at 3 p.m., the Gazebo music ends at 4 and the carolers stay home. The chamber adds: "Schedule subject to change without notice due to weather, etc."
Where do you park in Leavenworth in December, and is the shuttle free?
Plan on $4.50 an hour. The city's parking rates and calendar page sets 2026 rates by season, and its calendar shades every December day as busy: $4.50 an hour in the six downtown lots (Aasgard, Blewett, Blewett Annex, Colchuck, Dragontail and Freund), in the Glacier and Horseshoe Lake lots on U.S. 2 and on the street, with all-day lot rates of $35 to $40 and three hours in any one street zone. The one free downtown lot, Enchantments behind City Hall, has 48 stalls, a three-hour limit, free parking on weekends and validated parking only from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays; the city's November 2024 notice said it and the Freund lot went to fundraisers as paid parking on weekends from Thanksgiving weekend through December, a note its October 2026 lot page keeps only for Freund, now a pay lot, so treat the free lot as a long shot on a Saturday. From November 15 to March 15 the city bans parking on residential streets from midnight to 7 a.m. and on commercial streets from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m., and says "This restriction applies no matter what the weather or snow conditions." For the 2025 festival it also banned parking on both sides of six streets it designated as emergency response routes on festival weekends, with towing; on October 14, 2026 its Christmastown traffic page still showed the 2025 list, so check it for the 2026 version. The free alternative is Link Transit, whose every route is zero-fare. Route 32 runs from the Willkommen park-and-ride behind Safeway at 200 Ward Strasse, 89 stalls, six minutes into town at U.S. 2 and Mill Street, every half hour from 11 a.m. to about 6:45 p.m. on the October 2026 timetable; the chamber's FAQ says the December shuttle runs roughly 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week, and Link posts festival-day extras on its Route 32 page.
How far is Leavenworth from Enumclaw, and which pass do you take?
About 137 miles over two passes, or 144 over one. A public routing engine's route from Enumclaw runs north on State Route 169 to SR 18, east on Interstate 90 over Snoqualmie Pass, 3,022 feet by WSDOT, to Cle Elum, then SR 970 and U.S. 97 over Blewett Pass, 4,102 feet, to U.S. 2 and four miles west into town: 137 miles and just under three hours without stops. The other way follows SR 169 through Maple Valley to Interstate 405, SR 522 to Monroe and U.S. 2 over Stevens Pass, 4,061 feet: 144 miles and about three and a half hours. WSDOT's Blewett Pass page and its Stevens Pass page report conditions from November 1 to April 1, and on October 14, 2026 both showed no restrictions. The four chain signs and the $500 penalty behind them are explained in the Enumclaw to Yakima winter guide, and studded tires are legal from November 1 through March 31, as the studded tire guide sets out.
Can you take the train to Leavenworth?
Yes, and it arrives after dark. Amtrak's Empire Builder stops daily at Icicle Station, 11645 North Road, a platform with a shelter by Amtrak's station page, about 1.3 miles from Front Street by the routing engine. On Amtrak's October 2026 timetable, train 8 leaves Seattle's King Street Station at 4:55 p.m. and reaches Leavenworth at 8:17 p.m., two hours and forty-three minutes before the lights go off, and train 7 leaves Leavenworth at 7:18 a.m. and reaches Seattle at 11:29 a.m. Enumclaw to King Street takes two rides, Metro's 915 to Auburn and the Sounder or the 578 bus, as the Enumclaw to Seattle bus guide lays out. Fares move with the date, so price the trip on amtrak.com first.
How crowded is it, and when should you go?
Saturdays are the hard days. The chamber's FAQ says December is very busy, that traffic management teams work Saturdays from noon to 8 p.m., that weekend parking fills fast and that restaurants have longer waits on weekends and near the holidays; its advice is midweek, and it maps six indoor public restrooms. Snow is not promised; the FAQ points to the chamber's live webcams, which is the honest answer to anyone searching for Leavenworth snow in December. Look before you drive.
Why a railroad town has a light show at all
By HistoryLink's thumbnail history of Leavenworth, written by Laura Arksey in 2010, the Great Northern moved its rail yards to Wenatchee in the 1920s and the town did not recover until it remade itself for tourists. In 1962 the chamber asked the University of Washington's Bureau of Community Development for help; the self-study that followed became Project LIFE, for Leavenworth Improvement for Everyone, community leaders were talked out of a Gay Nineties theme in favor of a Bavarian village, and the Chikamin Hotel became the first remodel, renamed the Edelweiss. The University of Washington Libraries' exhibit on Ted Price and Bob Rodgers traces the Christmas festival to the lights they put on their Squirrel Tree restaurant, bought in 1960, and says it began as a single December weekend. The chamber calls the lights an "over 60-year tradition"; Troy Campbell, its executive director in 2020, put it at "more than 50 years" when he canceled that year's ceremony. The first year is not given here because no primary source gave one.
Before you go
Open the chamber's Christmastown page and December FAQ, the city's parking rates and calendar page and its Christmastown traffic page for the 2026 street restrictions, WSDOT's pass pages for chains, and Link's Route 32 page for the shuttle; the chamber answers at 509-548-5807 and the city's parking office at 509-888-0812. For another east-side winter outing, the Oak Creek elk feeding guide covers the state's winter feed site at Naches, and if the same week includes a tree, the Christmas tree permit guide covers the Forest Service's $10 permits near Enumclaw.
