When does Crystal Mountain open? Most seasons in November; by our count the median is Nov. 22. The resort has set Nov. 27, 2026, pending conditions.

Crystal Mountain Resort usually opens for the ski season in November, on a date set mainly by snow. By this site's count from the resort's table of opening days, with news reports for the two seasons since it was last updated, 41 of the 57 seasons from 1969-70 through 2025-26 opened in November, and the median opening day is November 22. As of October 2026, the resort, about 40 miles southeast of Enumclaw by way of SR 410, has set Friday, November 27, 2026 as opening day for the 2026-27 season, pending conditions.

The earliest opening on record is not quite what it sounds like. The resort lists it as October 1, 2013, and on that Tuesday it ran one lift, the gondola, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for 75 people who had been first to comment on a Facebook post, at $15 a ticket. Its announcement said the season "starts and ends tomorrow," warned that there would be no ropes or avalanche control, and told skiers that to get down they would have to hike back up to the gondola or walk out to the bottom. Fox13, recalling the day a year later, put the crowd at 100; the announcement and the news reports at the time said 75. The season proper began seven weeks later, on November 20.

When does Crystal Mountain usually open?

In November, most years, more often late in the month than early. The resort's table of opening days begins with the first, December 8, 1962, skips the next six seasons and runs from 1969-70 through 2023-24. With November 22, 2024 and the weekend of December 20, 2025 added from news reports, this site counts 57 seasons from 1969-70 on: 41 opened in November, 28 of them on the 16th or later, 11 in December, four in October and one in January. The median, the date with as many openings before it as after, is November 22, and in 43 of the 57 seasons the lifts had started by the Sunday after Thanksgiving. That first opening of 1962 belongs to the story of the skiers who built Crystal Mountain and named its peaks.

The spread is wide. The latest opening on the table, January 10, 1990, fell more than three months later in the season than the earliest. December starts are not rare: six of the last 20 seasons began in December, among them 2014-15, when the lifts first ran on December 22, and 2025-26. When the 2013 session was announced, a resort spokesperson told MyNorthwest that Crystal had opened around Halloween once in the early 1970s and that its next earliest opening was November 4, 2005. The table lists October 30, 1971, and two openings earlier still: October 21, 1970 and October 26, 1975.

Has Crystal Mountain set a 2026 opening day?

The resort has named a date, with a condition attached. The page for its Winter Stoke Block Party says opening day "is set for November 27th," pending conditions, which is the Friday after Thanksgiving. The Ikon Pass, the multi-resort pass sold by Crystal's owner, Alterra Mountain Company, lists the same tentative date on its website, updated October 8, 2026, and adds: "Opening dates are subject to change without notice." The block party is the resort's free annual pre-season party in town: music, a beer garden and contests on Cole Street in downtown Enumclaw, Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 4 to 8 p.m., held with the Enumclaw Chamber of Commerce.

A planned date is a target. The plan for 2025-26 was also the day after Thanksgiving, November 28, 2025; on December 1, KIRO 7 reported it postponed for lack of snow with no new date set, and the lifts did not start until the weekend of December 20. In 2024 it went the other way: a week of heavy snow let Crystal open on November 22, earlier than expected, KIRO 7 reported. The resort confirms the real day when conditions allow; in December 2025 the word came two days ahead.

What decides when Crystal Mountain opens?

Snow above all, and in 2025 the road as well. In 2014 the resort told Fox13 it needed at least two feet of snow before it could open. Warmth can undo a good start: in December 2025, KOMO reported, the snow level, the height at which rain turns to snow, sat so high that the ski areas got rain and lost their early base. Snowmaking helps near the bottom; in 2022 the resort credited its snowmaking crews for opening three lifts by the base on November 18. Peter Dale, the resort's senior director of mountain operations in 2025-26, summed it up in the full-opening announcement that December: "Nature sets the pace, and we stay flexible so our employees, skiers, and riders can safely enjoy the mountain."

Who gets to ski on opening day?

Often only pass holders, and not always on the whole mountain. In 2022 the first day, Friday, November 18, was for season pass holders on three lifts near the base, Discovery, Quicksilver and Chinook Express; the weekend went to Ikon and Crystal Legend pass holders, and the public came on Monday, November 21. In 2024, Ikon and Crystal pass holders had Friday, November 22 to themselves, and everyone else started on Saturday. The 2025-26 season began with limited operations, by the resort's plan: Green Valley, reached by the gondola, plus Chinook Express and Discovery. The table counts those first limited days as opening days; it lists November 18 for 2022 and October 1 for 2013.

Do you need a parking reservation on opening weekend?

On a weekend, plan on one. The resort's parking and shuttle page says the 2026-27 plan will stay close to that of 2025-26, requiring reservations on Saturdays, Sundays and some holidays, and promises details nearer winter. Under the 2025-26 rules, anyone arriving before noon on those days needed one. It was free within a rolling seven-day window for anyone with a lift ticket or pass, or $10 a day booked further ahead, and a car that arrived without one paid $30 at the lot if space remained. Cancellations closed at 6 a.m. on the day, and two no-shows brought a suspension from booking. That season's booking system opened at midnight on November 22, 2025. In 2024, opening weekend needed none: reservations started on November 30, KIRO 7 reported.

Is there a shuttle from Enumclaw to Crystal Mountain?

There was one in 2025-26, on winter weekends, and it left from town. The free Crystal Express ran from the Enumclaw Expo Center, the former county fairgrounds; this site has told how King County handed off its fairgrounds. The shuttle's 2025-26 schedule had it running on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from December through mid-March, booked up to seven days ahead, leaving Enumclaw at 6:30, 7:30, 8 and 9 a.m. and starting back at 2:30, 3:30, 4:30 and 5 p.m. That calendar begins after most opening days. No 2026-27 schedule had been posted by October 12, 2026; shuttle reservations for 2025-26 opened on December 6, 2025. The Expo Center lot also serves as Crystal's park-and-ride and as a meeting point for carpools, which need four or more people to count.

Why the road through Enumclaw matters on opening day

SR 410, Highway 410 to most drivers, is the resort's only winter road, because the state closes the highway over Chinook Pass each winter from Crystal Mountain Boulevard east (when Chinook Pass closes). The 2025-26 opening showed what happens when that road breaks. On December 10, 2025, with water over the highway, WSDOT closed SR 410 between Enumclaw and Greenwater. Boise Creek, the subject of this site's guide to its salmon, had cut under the road near milepost 26 in Enumclaw and badly eroded the eastbound lane. On December 16 the state reopened the highway on a one-lane gravel bypass along the westbound shoulder, run by a traffic light.

Crystal opened that weekend on terms worked out with WSDOT: it capped parking reservations to hold down traffic, required them every day, and suspended the Enumclaw shuttle. Crews finished the repair on December 23. The resort announced a full opening for the next day, Christmas Eve, with eight lifts, and the shuttle's return on December 25; its spring release set the shuttle's last day as March 29, 2026.

When does Crystal Mountain close for the season?

Usually in April. Of the 43 seasons with a closing date in the resort's table, 30 ended in April and the median is April 19, by this site's count, though every season from 2018-19 through 2023-24 ran into May or June. The page calls July 16, 2011 its latest closing date, but the table itself lists July 23 for the 1971-72 season. The 2025-26 season was scheduled to end with a bonus weekend on April 25 and 26, 2026, on Green Valley, reached by the gondola.

Before you leave Enumclaw

The resort's summer gondola season ended on September 20, 2026; on October 12, its hours page listed no later gondola dates. On the morning you go, start with the resort's mountain report, its daily page of lift and terrain status. WSDOT's Crystal to Greenwater pass report covers SR 410 as far as the turnoff; the state traditionally posts those reports from November 1 to April 1. Opening-day news comes from the resort itself, in releases and on social media, and its phone line is 833-279-7895. The trip is about 40 miles from downtown Enumclaw, roughly 33 on SR 410 and six up Crystal Mountain Boulevard, and a little over an hour by a routing engine's estimate; chains, traction rules and powder-day traffic are in the Enumclaw to Crystal Mountain drive guide. One caution for searchers: crystalmountain.com belongs to Crystal Mountain in Michigan, whose opening dates turn up in the same results. Washington's resort is at crystalmountainresort.com.
